Policies and Procedures
The list below highlights important information regarding policies and procedures for our campus community. It is important to note that this is not an exhaustive list of policies and procedures but this list is a strong starting point for issues that commonly affect UWRF students.
Academic policies at UWRF can be found in the UWRF Catalog, in addition to our academic policies listing.

The mission of the UW-River Falls is to "help prepare students to be productive, creative, ethical, engaged citizens and leaders with an informed global perspective." Consistent with that mission, the university welcomes your comments and concerns about our policies, programs and services to ensure that we possess the information necessary to make changes that contribute to student success. Each university unit is required to have policies and procedures regarding complaints. Please follow the steps below to share your complaint or suggestion.
Any individual who reasonably believes that a violation has occurred may file a complaint in the following manner:
- Wherever practical (e.g. when safety or other considerations allow), informal resolution of complaints is encouraged (e.g. informal discussion with the staff members, faculty member, administrator, and so on). Note that depending upon the nature of the allegation, the institution reserves the right to file a formal complaint on behalf of the individual.
Note: The following process is for complaints dealing with academic issues. Complaints regarding sex discrimination, sexual harassment and sexual assault should be reported to the Title IX coordinator or the appropriate deputy. Contact information can be found for complaints related to sex-based discrimination, bias incidents, or general student or employee concerns can be found on our ‘Report It’ website.
Steps in the Informal Complaint process
1. Discuss your concern, in person or in writing, with the individual involved. This should be the first step in almost every case, and if you skip this step, you will probably be asked to return to it. If a satisfactory outcome does not occur, you may choose to proceed to step 2.
2. Discuss the issue with the individual’s supervisor. You may be asked to put your complaint in writing. The supervisor may involve the faculty member and another administrator. If a satisfactory outcome does not occur, you may choose to proceed to step 3.
3. Discuss the issue with the supervisor’s supervisor. If a satisfactory outcome does not occur, you may choose to proceed to step 4.
4. File a formal complaint following the directions below.
Note: If an issue involves someone in a leadership role, such as a department chair who is also teaching a course related to the concern, the student should initiate the process with that person first.
Formal Complaints

Withdrawing from the university is a significant decision. Students contemplating withdrawal are encouraged to consult with their academic adviser, program director and/or dean before taking any action. It’s important to note that the date of withdrawal from all courses will be recorded on the student’s permanent academic record if they withdraw after classes have started.
The university uses the term "withdraw" to officially indicate that a student has dropped or plans to drop all courses for a particular term. This process is different from dropping one or more individual classes, as long as the student remains enrolled in at least one class. Prior withdrawing from the university, it is recommended that the student meet with a staff member in the Dean of Students office.
