What's a Meal Plan?

A meal plan is a group of meals purchased in advance (through your eSIS account). A plan covers a semester and meals are discounted from the walk-in price. To use a meal, simply wave your Falcon ID card in front of the prox-card reader at the entrance to Riverside Commons. You also have the option to "transfer" a meal to one of the other restaurants in the University Center. If you've got Dining Dollars on your account, you can use those if the cost of your transfer meal is more than the cash equivalency for that particular restaurant.

If you like the convenience of eating multiple meals during a meal period or if you're a block plan student who is running low on meals, you can purchase additional meals to be used during the same semester. Block meals don’t carry forward to the next semester and are only available for use in the semester they were purchased. Prices for block meal add ons are:

  • 10 block/flex meal add-on: $115 (Fall 2024-Spring 2025)
  • 25 block/flex meal add-on: $235 (Fall 2024-Spring 2025)

Using Your Meal Plan

Your meal plan is automatically attached to your Falcon ID card. Each time you eat, simply scan your ID card at the cashier station and a meal is deducted from your meal balance. At a transfer meal location, you’ll swipe your card once for a meal. If what you ordered is more than the transfer dollar allowance, you can scan your ID card again and use Dining Dollars for the balance.

Transfer meals allow meal plan participants to use a meal from their meal plan in retail dining areas outside of Riverside Commons. A cash equivalency for the meal is applied to the purchase made and if the meal cost exceeds the cash equivalency, the balance can be paid with cash, card or Dining Dollars. All meal plans allow for meals to be used at transfer locations instead of eating in Riverside Commons.

Cash Equivalency Value is:
$6.25    Lunch/Brunch
$6.75    Dinner
$6.25    Late Night

Dining Dollars are like a debit account on your student Falcon ID card. Dining Dollars can be used to purchase food and beverage items at any UWRF dining location and are exempt from sales tax. They can't be purchased independently, taken as cash, transferred to others or refunded.

Dining Dollars remaining at the end of fall semester may rollover to spring semester only if the student has an active spring semester meal plan. If you're not required to be on a meal plan and you cancel any portion of the spring semester meal plan, the unused fall Dining Dollars will not be refunded. All Dining Dollars must be used by the end of the spring semester, they don't carry over to the next academic year.

Meal Plan FAQs

If you're on the 14 or 21 Weekly Plan, you can use one meal (either a meal in Riverside Commons or other transfer locations) during each meal period. There are 26 meal periods per week. If you're on the weekly plan, you have from Sunday morning to Saturday evening to use up your meal swipes (either 14 or 21, depending on your plan) but you can only use one swipe during each of the meal periods.

Monday-Friday meal periods: Four meal periods - breakfast, lunch, dinner and late-night
Saturday-Sunday meal periods: Three meal periods - brunch/lunch, dinner and late-night

If you're a block meal plan holder, you can use multiple meals at one time.

Choosing the right meal plan is an important decision for first year students and while everyone’s preferences and schedules are different, there are a few key recommendations to keep in mind when selecting your plan..

For most first year students, we recommend the 14/21 Weekly Meal Plan or the All-Access Meal Plan. These plans are ideal because they provide flexibility and enough meals to cover a variety of dining habits. Both plans reset weekly, so you won’t run out of meals during the semester as you settle into a routine and experiment with different dining options. With these plans, you can explore various dining venues in the UC and try different foods and your meals will always renew at the beginning of each week.

We do not typically recommend the 75-Block Meal Plan for first year students. Many students find that the 75-block plan, while convenient, can run out of meals before the semester ends, especially as they adjust to new schedules and dining habits during their first year away from home.

One of the great things about UWRF is that you can switch meal plans during the first week of classes each semester, without penalty (exclusions may apply). This gives you the opportunity to change your plan if you find that your initial choice isn’t quite the right fit for your lifestyle.

Remember, we encourage you to explore and experiment with different meal options! Finding the best plan for you is a personal process and we’re here to help you navigate it.

The 14 and 21 Weekly Plans come with five "free" flex/block meals. These meals can be used if you want to bring a guest with you to dine on campus - just tell the cashier you want to use your flex/block meal for your guest.

If you're on a 14 or 21 Weekly Plan, you may also use the flex/block meals if you want to eat twice during a specific meal period. For example, you eat lunch at 1 p.m. and then want to grab another meal at 2:30 p.m. to bring back to your room for later. Those meals are during the same meal period so you can use a flex/block meal for the second meal. If you're on a weekly plan, you can purchase additional flex/block meals in packages of 10 or 25 meals.

Block plans already allow the use of multiple meals in any meal period so they don't come with flex/block meals. However, if you're a block plan participant and you're running low on meals toward the end of the semester, you can purchase flex/block meals to add to your account.

All unused flex/block meals expire at the end of the semester they were purchased.

Want to purchase a flex/block meal package of 10 meals ($115) or 25 meals ($235)? Simply email dining@uwrf.edu.

Dining Dollars aren't something you can "add" money to. Dining Dollars are placed on each meal plan from the UWRF Dining account and are not able to be added to.  Most students who run low on Dining Dollars use either cash, card or phone pay options. All food locations accept cash, credit card and phone pay (Android/Apple) options.

If you're living on or off-campus and are on a meal plan but aren't feeling well, we can help!

  1. Talk to your roommate or a friend about helping to get your meals and deliver them to you.
  2. Fill out the request form at least one hour before pickup If insufficient time is provided, meal will not be ready for pickup: Self-Quarantine Meal Form
  3. On the form, you'll have three options to choose from for your meal(s):
    1. Regular Meal: Your designated friend will go through Riverside Commons like normal but with a to-go container given to them at the cashier station. View the current menu at and let your friend know what to pick up for you. One meal will be deducted from your meal plan.
    2. Liquids Only*: Includes six soup broth packets, six Saltine cracker packages, three slices of white bread (plastic wrapped), three hot tea bags, three applesauce cups, three Jell-O cups, ginger ale (12 fl. oz.), three water bottles, sugar and salt packets, utensils and drink cups. Three meals will be deducted from your meal plan. Maximum use is three consecutive days. Note: due to supply chain challenges, these items may be substituted.
*Meal contents are examples only, actual content may vary.
    3. Liquids and Solids*: Includes one instant oatmeal, two soup packages, one Rice-a-Roni cup, one mashed potato cup, four Saltine cracker packages, three hot tea bags, two applesauce cups, ginger ale (12 fl. oz.), three whole fruit, one pudding container, four packages of peanut butter, two packages of jelly, three slices of wheat bread (plastic wrapped), three sugar packets, utensils, drink cups and three water bottles. Three meals will be deducted from your meal plan. Maximum use is three consecutive days. Note: due to supply chain challenges, these items may be substituted.
*Meal contents are examples only, actual content may vary.

If you select the Regular Meal option, you must fill out the form for each meal period, otherwise your friend won't be able to get a meal for you. If you select the liquids only or liquids and solids options, you only have to fill out the form once each day.

  4. Have your designated friend visit the Riverside Commons cashier station and give them your name. If you've filled out the form, the cashier will know your friend is coming. Depending on the meal option you've selected, your friend will either be given a to-go container (regular meal) or a prepackaged bag (liquids only or liquids and solids options).

If your friend is getting a meal for themselves too, they'll follow the standard process.

Important things to note:
You can't use a transfer meal for this program. If you use this process for more than two consecutive days, Student Health and Counseling will be notified. Remember to fill out the form at least one hour before your designated friend plans to pick up your meal(s). It's important that we have time to prepare!

We contract with Chartwells, a professional food service company, to provide dining services on campus. Click here to check out daily menu options and nutrition information.

We take nutrition and allergy needs seriously. A registered dietitian is available to meet with students to discuss their personal nutrition goals and dietary needs. Our entire dining staff is trained on food safety to make sure we handle food properly and prevent cross-contact.

Allergen Friendly Station: We have an allergen friendly station called "Delicious Without" filled with options that do not contain gluten or the top nine allergens. The food at this station is stored, prepared and served separately to avoid cross-contact with allergen containing foods.

Avoiding Gluten: Located in Riverside Commons, the Avoiding Gluten station has a cooler full of items made without gluten-containing ingredients such as buns, bread and bagels. Other options are available throughout our dining locations.

Vegan/Vegetarian (Rooted): The "Rooted" station in Riverside Commons offers a specially designed vegan and vegetarian meal that incorporates special protein requirements as well as offering flavorful and fresh ingredients.

Signs showing nutrition information may be found near the food areas in many venues but if you have any questions, just ask a food service employee! Questions? Email us at dining@uwrf.edu.

Yes! All meal plans allow for meals (All Access has a five meal limit each week) to be used at a transfer location instead of eating in Riverside Commons. Meal transfers are available for lunch/brunch, dinner and late-night meal periods at multiple locations in the University Center. Visit When and Where to Eat for a complete list of business hours.

Weekly plans only allow one meal to be used during each meal period so if you eat in Riverside Commons during a specific meal period, you'll have to wait until the next meal period to use a transfer meal. If you've got Flex/Block meals, you may use those to dine a second time during the same meal period.

In addition to using a transfer meal for lunch and dinner at the multiple transfer meal locations in the UC, there is also a late-night transfer available from 8:00-10:00 p.m.

Instead of eating inside Riverside Commons, we offer Freddy 2GO containers for you to use. This non-disposable option helps all of us to reduce our impact on the environment! (this option is not available to All Access meal plan participants)

When you arrive at Riverside Commons, you can ask the cashier to sign out a Freddy 2GO to you. They'll have you scan your ID card for the container check-out and then scan it again to charge a meal to your meal plan. Place your selected food items inside the container to take it to go!

You'll be given a clean and sanitized Freddy 2GO container each time you request one. Return your container the next time you visit Riverside Commons by placing the used container in the receptacle near the cashier station. If you forget to return your Freddy 2GO container, a $10 non-returned container fee will be charged to your eSIS account at the end of the semester.

Use the UWRF GET app to view your Freddy 2GO balance. If you have a container available to check out, it will indicate a balance of one. You can't check out a container if the balance is zero.

Research shows the connection between student success and access to quality nutrition. As a result, the UW System Board of Regents requires a base meal plan for students residing in a traditional residence hall. The default meal plan for students that haven't already earned at least 60 undergraduate credits is the 14 Weekly Plan, which allows for 14 meals during a seven day period.

Students living in a traditional residence hall don't have their own kitchens where they can safely store and prepare food.  While there is one kitchen in the lower level of traditional residence halls, access to space is limited.

Numerous studies have documented the relationship between increased meal frequency and higher academic achievement. The UW System Board of Regents requires all students living in a traditional residence hall to have a minimum mandatory meal plan contract. This means we can't cancel your meal plan if you still have a residence hall contract.

Note: Only students living in South Fork Suites are exempt from the mandatory meal plan contract.
