Signing the Housing Contract

Academic Year Contracts
  • Students can sign their housing contract beginning mid-September the year before they graduate high school.
  • They can choose a roommate using the roommate search feature in the Housing Portal beginning in mid-November.
    • Students can select a random roommate during room selection if they don't use the roommate search feature.
  • They can choose a residence hall and room with their roommate starting in early summer (incoming students) or early spring (returning students).
Spring-Only Contract
  • Students can sign their housing contract beginning in early October of the current academic year.
  • They can request a specific roommate by emailing reslife@uwrf.edu after completing their housing contract.
  • They can indicate their preferred residence hall(s) by emailing reslife@uwrf.edu (subject to availability).
  • Students will be emailed their residence hall, room, roommate and Move In details in early January.

Frequently asked questions about applying for housing

Are students required to live on campus?

All first and second year students are required to live on campus. National research shows that students who live on campus have higher grade point averages, are more satisfied with their college experience, are more engaged in co-curricular experiences and are more likely to graduate than students who live off-campus.

Exceptions to the policy may be granted if a student meets certain special circumstances.

What happens if my student doesn't get their first choice housing?

Housing sign-up is organized by time and location. Like buying concert tickets, select seats sell first and may sell out. It is crucial for your student to have their top three housing options in mind when selecting a living space.

To help save time, they may begin their housing application and build roommate groups ahead of their housing sign up time. This will allow your student to select their living space on the specific day sign-up is for that location.

Learn more about incoming student room sign up and returning student room sign up.

What is my student wants to live in a single?

Residence Life offers a Single Room lottery during the Returning Student Room Selection period. Residence Life does not offer single rooms to incoming new students. If your student needs a single room due to a medical reason, please reach out to the Disability Resource Center to start the accommodations process.

Moving in and moving out

Helping your student move in and out of their residence hall can be a great experience for both of you. You'll get to see their room up close and help transition your student into their new living space.

Academic breaks and housing

At UWRF, there are four different breaks throughout the academic year:

Students living on campus are able to stay within their assigned residence hall room and are able to access their room during any break on campus at no additional cost.

Additional FAQs about living on campus

How much does it cost to live on campus?

How much your student will pay for living on campus will depend on:

What happens if my student changes their mind after we start the cntract?

The residence hall contract may be canceled only before the start of the contract term. The residence hall contract is fully activated once the contract term begins and is in effect for the entire academic year. Residents are required to fulfill the contractual obligations unless a contract termination is initiated or approved by Residence Life.

If a resident vacates before the final week of the academic year without receiving approval for housing termination, it will result in a breach of contract. The resident will be responsible for 100% of the remaining cost of the contract and the resident will forfeit the $100 deposit.

Reminder: Students must live on campus for two full academic years as required by our residency policy.

Will summer housing be available for students?

Residence Life provides housing in a select residence hall during the summer for enrolled students. Students will receive an email after Spring Break regarding the summer housing options.

How does my student submit a maintenance request?

Does your student need repairs or have other issues in their assigned room? Your student can submit a maintenance request through the work request system.
