Scholarship Opportunities

Each fall, students can apply for the James Gleenen Modern Language Scholarship and other scholarships with one application through the UW-River Falls Scholarship System. Deadline dates for certain scholarship opportunities may vary. Explore this page for an overview of English/TESOL scholarships.

To get started, follow these easy steps:

  1. Log into the UW-River Falls Scholarship System.
  2. Select "Sign In" and then sign in using your UWRF W# and password.
  3. Complete your simple online general scholarship application.
  4. Review all recommended scholarship opportunities and apply with the click of a button! You're also able to do a search to narrow down the list of available scholarships to review. For example, type "Modern Languages."

An email notification to all scholarship applicants will be sent to their UWRF email account once all selections have been finalized and the selection period has closed.

All scholarship awards are contingent on students meeting eligibility requirements as defined by the UW-River Falls Foundation and Financial Aid office.

This scholarship supports an entering sophomore, junior or senior UWRF student with a French, German or Spanish major.

Serving Wisconsin teachers since 1913, the Wisconsin Association For Language Teachers is committed to the growth and expansion of language learning and teaching throughout the state of Wisconsin. In addition, they offer numerous opportunities for professional development, grants and awards for language teachers at all levels of instruction.

  • Visit the Financial Aid Office's Study Abroad webpage to learn about financial aid and various on-campus scholarship opportunities for education abroad/away programs.
  • Wisconsin Resident Education Abroad Grants are available to support UWRF students participating in UW-River Falls international study programs. These grants are meant to defray the cost of an education abroad program but, because the grant depends upon the Wisconsin state budget and appropriate fund allocation, should not be the deciding factor in whether or not a student is able to pursue an international education experience. Grants will be made in the $1,000 (semester-length program) range or in the $500 (short-term program) range, depending on the availability of funds and the number of applicants. The final dollar amount awarded will be determined based on the total cost of the program and the student's financial need. These grant monies are provided by the State of Wisconsin and are allocated through the Universities of Wisconsin. Please note, only students participating in UWRF programs (where tuition is paid to UWRF) are eligible for this grant.

National Scholarships

The Gilman International Scholarship offers awards for undergraduate study abroad and was established by the International Academic Opportunity Act of 2000. This scholarship provides awards for U.S. undergraduate students who are receiving Federal Pell Grant funding at a two-year or four-year college or university to participate in study abroad programs worldwide.

Boren Awards provide up to $20,000 to U.S. undergraduate students to study abroad in areas of the world that are critical to U.S. interests and underrepresented in study abroad, including Africa, Asia, Central and Eastern Europe, Eurasia, Latin America and the Middle East. The countries of Western Europe, Canada, Australia and New Zealand are excluded.

Boren Scholars represent a variety of academic backgrounds, but all are interested in studying less commonly taught languages, including but not limited to Arabic, Chinese, Korean, Portuguese, Russian and Swahili.

Boren Scholarships provide American undergraduate students with the resources and encouragement they need to acquire skills and experiences in areas of the world critical to the future security of our nation, in exchange for their commitment to seek work in the federal government.

Freeman Awards for Study in Asia (Freeman-ASIA) provides scholarships for U.S. undergraduate students with demonstrated financial need to study abroad in East or Southeast Asia.

The Fulbright Program provides grants for individually designed study/research projects OR for English Teaching Assistant Programs. Fulbright recipients will meet, work, live with and learn from the people of the host country, sharing daily experiences.

Fund for Education Abroad (FEA) is committed to increasing the opportunities for dedicated American students to participate in high-quality, rigorous education abroad programs by reducing financial restrictions through the provision of grants and scholarships.

DAAD Scholarships offer a wide range of funding opportunities for individuals and institutions in higher education. Since DAAD New York is the representative office for all of North America, its programs are open to students, faculty, administrators, and staff of higher education institutions geographically located in the United States, Canada and their territories (Puerto Rico, Guam, etc). There are a few special programs that may extend to constituencies beyond that. Our primary goal is to facilitate transatlantic mobility to Germany for US and Canadian scholars, therefore Germany must be a component of your intended academic travel. Funding is awarded on a competitive basis; we consider the academic merit of the individual, the feasibility and quality of the proposal, and the impact of the applicant and application as a whole.
