Essay Contest

The UWRF History and Philosophy Department invites submissions for its annual “Outstanding Essay in History” Award. If you ever wrote and submitted an essay for a history or philosophy class you took at UWRF then your work is eligible.

Each prize carries a Letter of Award that will be personally bestowed to the author at the banquet and publicized on campus and the department web site. First prize winners will also receive an additional prize.

So hurry up, dig up that essay your instructor marked as brilliant, or print that cherished paper of yours which you always thought was so good, but never truly appreciated! This is your chance to get recognized and add a distinction to your job application portfolio!

Up to three prizes in each category may be awarded as merited.

Winners and honorable mentions will:

  • be acknowledged in an email to the entire group that received the invitation to participate,
  • be listed on the Essay Competition web page,
  • receive a certificate of award, and
  • have a permanent resume "perk."

Student Involvement

The History and Philosophy Department at UW-River Falls offers students enriching opportunities to explore history both inside and outside the classroom. Through engaging clubs, national honor societies and student-led initiatives, majors and non-majors alike can connect with peers who share an interest in history, deepen their academic involvement and build professional credentials. Explore details about two popular student organizations that help foster community and scholarship within our department.

Open to all students, regardless of major, the History Club is a welcoming space for anyone interested in the past—from ancient civilizations to modern movements. There are no GPA requirements or dues, and you’re welcome to join anytime or just attend a meeting to see what we’re about. The club hosts fun and educational events like museum trips, historical site visits, guest speakers and more. Whether you're a history buff or simply curious, this is a great way to get involved and connect with fellow students.

Phi Alpha Theta is a prestigious national honor society that recognizes excellence in the study of history. Open to all majors, students must complete at least 12 credits in history with a GPA of 3.1 or higher in those courses and hold an overall GPA of at least 3.0. Lifetime membership includes benefits such as a certificate, graduation honor cords, resume enhancement and a subscription to The Historian journal. To apply, students must submit an application and a one-time $50 fee. Participation reflects academic distinction and a passion for historical scholarship.

Recipients of history scholarships will be notified by the History and Philosophy Department in April. Scholarship certificates will be available for pickup or can be sent via email. Email notification from the Financial Aid office generally occurs in April or May.

All scholarship awards are contingent on students meeting eligibility requirements as defined by the UW-River Falls Foundation and the Financial Aid office.

Advising and Support

You are required to consult your adviser before registering (for fall/spring semesters) to discuss your schedule and to receive your PIN (Personal Identification Number) permitting registration. The PIN changes each semester, so you will not be able to use an old one. Your adviser's name is on your Degree Audit Report (DAR).

Have your Degree Audit Report (DAR) visible for your advising session.

  1. Make an advising appointment
    • Follow the instructions in the advising email you received. Don't wait until the last minute—if your adviser is unavailable last-minute, your registration could be delayed—it is to your advantage to register at the earliest allowable date! Forgot your adviser's name? Look on your DAR.
  2. Have these two items ready for your advising appointment
    1. Your tentative schedule for the upcoming semester; and
    2. Your DAR (Degree Audit Report) from eSIS.
  3. Register online at the date and time given to you (and also after that time)
    • It is to your advantage to register at the earliest eligible time!

Research Resources

The Wisconsin Historical Society owns one of the nation's richest collections documenting the Civil Rights movement, which includes more than 100 manuscript collections about the Mississippi Freedom Summer Project of 1964. That equates to approximately 750 folders of relevant documents totaling over 100,000 pages.

Over 30,000 pages from the Freedom Summer project manuscripts - enough to fill several file cabinets - are now available online. In them you find official records of organizations such as the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee (SNCC) and Congress of Racial Equality (CORE), the personal papers of movement leaders and activists such as Amzie Moore, Mary King and Howard Zinn, letters and diaries of northern college students who went South to volunteer for the summer, newsletters produced in Freedom Schools, racist propaganda, newspaper clippings, pamphlets and brochures, magazine articles, telephone call logs, candid snapshots, internal memos, press releases and much more.

Anything not digitized may be borrowed and used in UWRF Area Research Center.

Stephen Feinstein Collection
The vast personal book collection of Dr. Stephen Feinstein is now available to the public. Most books in the collection can be sent to individuals who are unaffiliated with UWRF through regular inter-library loan channels.
