A History and Philosophy Success Story: Alex Halverson, '08

"I became a student at UWRF in fall of 2005. I was not sure what I wanted to do exactly, but I was interested in history and philosophy, so I enrolled in the history program. One of the first classes I took was HIST 101 Origins of Civilizations. Up to that point it was the most difficult class I had ever taken and provided me with an introduction into the sort of intellectual rigor I would need to succeed in the program. I had a similar experience with the first philosophy class I took, Living Issues in Philosophy, taught by the late, great Dr. Moosa. As I proceeded in the department, I had the opportunity to take other classes that challenged me further, like Logical Reasoning, the Islamic Middle East to 1500, Modern China, and the History of U.S. Diplomacy.

Classes like these taught me how to think critically, write clearly, and provided the foundation for me to get into the University of Minnesota Law School and pursue a career in law. I have worked for the Department of Justice Tax Division and IRS Office of Chief Counsel, taking to trial complex cases that put to use the analytical skills I first learned as a student in the UWRF Department of History and Philosophy.

I will put those skills to further use as a prosecutor with the Hennepin County Attorney’s Office in the Worker’s Protection Unit. I can say without hesitation that I would not be where I am today without the education I received at UWRF."
