SGA Frequently Asked Questions

The Student Government Association (SGA) is an official governing body at UWRF. We're committed to representing the voices of the student body at the university. We include a variety of committees and subcommittees and partner with other shared governance units at both the university and state level. 

Student Senate is made up of student leaders who work together to represent the student body, advocate for student needs and improve the campus experience. While the exact structure may vary, Student Senate is typically organized into several key groups that each play an important role.

• Executive Board: The Executive Board provides leadership and direction for Student Senate. These elected student leaders oversee the organization's operations, set priorities, lead meetings, represent students to university leadership and help guide the work of committees and senators.
• Senators: Senators are elected or appointed representatives who serve the student body by bringing forward student concerns, proposing ideas, voting on legislation and helping shape campus initiatives. They act as the primary voice of students within shared governance.
• Standing Committees: Committees focus on specific areas of Student Senate's work, such as campus life, academic affairs, finance and more. Committee members research issues, gather feedback, develop recommendations, plan initiatives and present resolutions to the full Senate.
• Professional Advisers: Professional advisers provide guidance, mentorship, and institutional expertise to Student Senate. They help ensure compliance with university policies, support leadership development, oversee administrative processes and provide continuity as student leadership changes from year to year.

Each part of Student Senate has a unique role, but they all work together toward a common goal: representing students, advocating for positive change, supporting student organizations and creating a vibrant campus community.

Student Government Association hosts two elections each year: one in the fall semester and one in the spring semester. The election in the spring is for building the Senate for the following year as that election will take place towards the end of the spring semester. Students can also be appointed by the President outside of election windows but is subject to Senate approval via a majority vote on a resolution depending on the vacancy they are filling.
