Gain Experience before Graduation

Internships in Sociology, Criminology and Anthropology provide students with invaluable experience in social services, government, non-profit, juvenile and adult treatment programs, and local law enforcement agencies. Students work with professionals, gaining practical, transferable skills for a broad array of future careers.

Reach out to your academic advisor, Dr. Desiree Wiesen-Martin (Criminology internship coordinator), or Dr. Erik Withers (Sociology internship coordinator) with additional questions

The Process of Getting an Internship

Step 1: Complete the Application for Internship or Certification Program form at Application for Internship or Certification Program

Step 2: Meet with the appropriate internship coordinator, for Sociology, Dr. Erik Withers and for Criminology, Dr. Desireé Wiesen-Martin. Prior to this meeting you should identify, if possible, the type of internship placement you would like. Examples of prior internships can be found below.

  • For Summer internships you should do this by December 10th.
  • For Fall internships you should do this by the March 10th.
  • For Spring internships, you should do this by September 10th.

Step 3: Have or get an up-to-date resume. Set up an appointment with Career Services to go over the construction of an appropriate.

Step 4: Contact agencies or organizations. It is valuable to sit down again with the internship coordinator with a template of what you intend to say.

  • If you are going to call the agency, practice what you will say to them.
  • If you are going to email them, it needs to be a professional email.
