Spanish (Major and Minor Option)

The modern language liberal arts major in Spanish is a 34-credit program designed to develop advanced language proficiency, cultural literacy and critical thinking. Students complete 19 credits of foundational coursework, progressing from intermediate Spanish through advanced communication, conversation and composition. The program emphasizes both historical and contemporary perspectives, offering electives in Spanish and Latin American civilization, literature and professional applications of the language. Students tailor their experience by choosing from thematic paths—literary studies or professional Spanish—culminating in an upper-level course in either advanced Spanish or Latin American literature. With opportunities for internships or education abroad, this major prepares students to communicate effectively in Spanish-speaking environments and engage thoughtfully with global cultures.

Spanish Education (Major and Minor)

The Spanish education program is a comprehensive 37-credit program designed for students seeking advanced fluency in Spanish alongside a deep understanding of Spanish-speaking cultures. Core coursework builds from intermediate language skills through advanced communication and composition. Students enrich their experience by choosing electives in literature, civilization or professional Spanish, and engage in real-world learning through internships or education abroad. The program also includes Spanish phonetics to support accurate pronunciation and communication. Complemented by professional education courses, the curriculum prepares students with both the linguistic proficiency and cultural insight essential for educational and professional settings that value bilingual communication.
