Background:

Erik Johnson has been a Professor in the Music and Stage and Screen Arts Department since 2008 with an emphasis on Screen Arts and Media Storytelling. In addition to his academic background, Johnson worked professionally in the field of television and video production for thirteen years in a variety of roles that included production manager of a television production company, news photographer, director of live remote event coverage, producer of business magazine series, director of live studio productions, co-producer of history television series, owner of video production business, and producer/director of music and action sports television series, among others.

His documentary film thesis project "The Car Club" was broadcast on PBS for three years and received international distribution. 

Johnson is an active member of the International Media Co-Space organization where he created partnerships with universities in Germany, Norway and Thailand and has lectured at international conferences, created collaborative projects with students and faculty and led study abroad courses and projects.

Johnson serves on the Board of Directors at Town Square Television in Inver Grove Heights, Minn., an organization that has hosted student internships and launched the careers of several alumni.

His creative research has included nonprofit promotional and educational video campaigns, music video productions with his bands and visual documentary storytelling projects on his unplanned experience with adult orthodontia. He has produced and hosted a radio podcast about music, art and entertainment and currently produces a music/skateboarding web series with a companion radio broadcast show, that began as a broadcast television series in 2006.
