Basic Skills Assessment
One of the first assessments to evaluate a prospective teacher candidate is an assessment of their reading, writing, and mathematics (basic skills). Currently there are three different options for a teacher candidate to demonstrate their basic skills proficiency.
Completion of Specific College Coursework
Basic skills in Reading, Writing and Mathematics is demonstrated by completion of the following courses with a minimum grade of C or tested out of in each:
- ENGL 100 Academic Reading and Writing (3)
AND - One of the following Mathematics Courses:
- MATH 126 Activities in Math (3)
- MATH 136 Quantitative Reasoning (3)
- MATH 146 College Algebra (3)
- MATH 147 Algebra and Trigonometry (3)
- MATH 149 Pre-Calculus (4)
- MATH 156 Calculus for Business Math (4)
- MATH 216 Elementary Statistical Concepts (3)
- MATH 226 Fundamentals of Statistics (3)
- MATH 246 Math for Elementary Teachers I (4)
- PSYC 201 Behavioral Statistics (3)
- TED 323 Content and Techniques of K-3 Mathematics I (3)
In the event a candidate does not complete the above with the minimum required GPA they can elect to demonstrate basic skills by either completing:
For a grade lower than a C in English 100 you can either repeat the course for a better grade or successfully pass the following outside assessments:
- The Core Academic Skills for Educators: Reading with a minimum score of 156, AND
- The Core Academic Skills for Educators: Writing with a minimum score of 162
OR
- The Minnesota NES Essential Academic Skills (EAS), Reading subtest with a minimum score of 520, AND
- Minnesota NES Essential Academic Skills (EAS), Writing subtest with a minimum score of 520
For a grade lower than a C in an approved Math course you can either repeat the course for a better grade or successfully pass the following outside assessments:
- The Core Academic Skills for Educators: Mathematics (On-screen four-function calculator provided.) with a minimum score of 150
OR
- The Minnesota NES Essential Academic Skills (EAS), Mathematics subtest with a minimum score of 520.
