Frequently Asked Questions

Yes. However, for safety and liability reasons, it must be pre-approved by FOA staff.

Yes! We have climbing shoes, harnesses and manual belay devices available to borrow at no additional cost.

Yes, although loose chalk is discouraged. All chalk must be contained in a bag or bucket.

While we do not lend chalk in our gym, we do have limited Friction Labs products available for purchase. We also carry OSO Supply Co. Chalk Bags.

All climbers wishing to belay must have prior climbing experience and successfully pass the Top-Rope Belaying Skills Test. The test must be completed before climbing, belaying or participating in any activity in the climbing gym on the day of the test. Taking the test after you have started climbing in the facility is not allowed.

The Top-Rope Belaying Skills Test requires a belayer to successfully demonstrate the following procedures:

  1. Properly put on a harness and tie in using the appropriate tie in loop(s) on the harness and a Figure Eight Follow-Through Knot.
  2. Set up as a belayer using a manual belay device properly.
  3. Preform safety checks and climbing commands.
  4. Effectively belay a climber.

Catch the climber in a fall and demonstrate the proper lowering technique.

If you need to learn these procedures or want a refresher, register online for a free Top-Rope Belay Clinic!
