Financial Aid and Scholarships

There are many avenues to pay for grad school. The first place to start is by reviewing tuition and fees at uwrf.edu/studentbilling/TuitionFees/. You can also use the estimated cost information found at here. You can find information on the various types of aid by exploring below. 

Connect with your adviser if you have questions, especially about topics like the total number of credits required to keep financial aid and delay repayment status.

Scholarships

Current students can apply for the seven UWRF scholarships listed below. Apply during the fall semester at uwrf.academicworks.com/. Look for announcements sent to our program listserv and social media pages for deadline updates. 

Additionally, professional organizations such as the Wisconsin School Counseling Association also offer scholarships to counseling students. Examples include:

The Carol Barry Memorial Scholarship supports a student working towards a Master of Science in Education in Counseling. Requirements include: 

  • Must be currently working in the St. Paul, Minnesota Public School District.
  • Preference will be given to an applicant working at Como Park Senior High School.

This scholarship supports graduate students seeking an M.S.E. School Counseling degree. Applicants must provide a brief paragraph that addresses their interest in becoming a school counselor and include skills, experiences and/or volunteer work that you will bring to the program. Scholarships will be awarded using the following criteria:

  • Must be admitted to the M.S.E. in counseling program
  • Preference will be given to students who are:
    • Members of an underrepresented minority group, or
    • First generation higher education student.

This scholarship supports graduate students seeking an M.S.E. School Counseling degree. The student must be planning to take the internship course within the next two semesters (spring or fall). Applicants must provide a brief personal essay which describes those opportunities the candidate has engaged in to broaden their educational experience, such as:

  • Affiliation with a school counseling professional organization like WSCA or MSCA.
  • Participation in a recognized student organization at UWRF such as the UWRF School Counseling Student Organization.
  • Other profession related non-academic experiences like group work at schools, depression screenings, graduate assistantships, etc.   

The Therese Lachecki Memorial Scholarship supports graduate students seeking an M.S.E. School Counseling degree. To be eligible, you must have completed at least one semester of coursework in the program. Applicants must provide a brief personal essay which describes the opportunities the candidate has engaged in to broaden their educational experience and the impact that service to others has, such as:

  1. Ideas surrounding the impact of service in your or others' lives and how that might impact your work as a future school counselor.
  2. Affiliation with a school counseling professional organization like WSCA or MSCA.
  3. Participation in a recognized student organization at UWRF such as the School Counseling Student Association.
  4. Other profession-related, non-academic experiences like group work at school, depression screening, graduate assistantships, etc.

This scholarship supports graduate students seeking an M.S.E. School Counseling degree. Applicants must have completed at least one semester of coursework in the program. You must provide a brief personal essay which describes the opportunities you have engaged in to broaden your educational experience and your ideas around remaining engaged with the counseling profession upon graduation, such as:

  • Ideas surrounding the importance of collaboration (i.e., Counseling Program Stakeholder Group) and the responsibilities that graduates of the program have in taking lessons from the program and paying them forward (specific example).
  • Affiliation with a school counseling professional organization like WSCA or MSCA.
  • Participation in a recognized student organization at UWRF such as the School Counseling Student Association.
  • Other profession-related, non-academic experiences like group work at school, depression screening, graduate assistantships, etc. 

The Ann Laufenberg Krupkat Scholarship supports graduate students seeking an M.S.E. School Counseling degree. Applicants must be officially accepted into the counseling program and have either completed in the spring or are currently taking COUN 610: Introduction to School Counseling at the time of application (fall). The minimum GPA requirement is 2.75. You must provide a short paragraph as to why you want to become a school counselor and a compelling reason as to why/how this scholarship will impact your success in the program. Additionally, you must indicate whether you have received other scholarships or grants for their graduate work.

The Mary J. Crownhart Scholarship supports a graduate student in the Counseling and School Psychology Department. Recipients must have a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0 and must exhibit leadership qualities through involvement in professional and other organizations.

The Richard James Baker Memorial Scholarship supports a student who is admitted to and enrolled in the UWRF counseling program and who:

  • Must be an active-duty service member or reservist or veteran or a parent, child or sibling of an active service member/reservist/veteran.
  • Can describe how their affiliation with the military has influenced their goal to become a school counselor.

Preference will be given to persons associated with the United States Air Force.



Grants

Grants are considered gift aid and don't need to be paid back so they may be an option for you. Click the + signs below to learn more about UWRF's grant opportunities. 

Who: Minority graduate students or non-minority disadvantaged graduate students 
Eligibility: Based on African American, Hispanic, American Indian, Alaskan Native, Southeast Asian ethnicity or being an economically disadvantaged non-minority graduate student. Must be admitted into a degree-seeking graduate program and must be enrolled in at least two credits per semester.
Apply: Deadlines are typically during spring semester. Please submit the application to the address on the form. 
Award: Tuition/fee charges (at the Wisconsin resident rate) plus an amount for book/supplies each fall and spring semester. Summer grants are dependent on remaining funding.

Graduate Assistantships/Student Worker Positions

Each spring semester, the counseling program advertises for two graduate assistant positions for the program. These positions start at the beginning of fall semester and run through the entire academic year, through the end of spring semester. GAs work 12 hours per week on campus and are paid employees. Duties range from direct work with faculty and prospective students to filing and program maintenance. Join the counseling program listserv to find out more. 



Loans

Loans require repayment, many times with an interest rate. There are many loans available from a variety of sources. The Ethel McDonald Ellis Loan Fund is offered through a local bank.
